Founded in 2019 by TV industry executive Charles Dawson, Thousand Films bridges a gap between commissioning editors and unrepresented writing talent by reading huge numbers of pilot scripts by writers that don’t have the benefit of agency representation.
In 2023 Thousand Films joined forces with Grey Seal Media to create its own internal development slate, to supercharge the development of work from new writers. Producer and ex-writers’ agent Katie Langridge oversees this in-house development drive. Thousand Films’ objective is to become a development home for new talent, and a place that the industry trusts to bring new voices into the market.
With a proven track record of supporting the next generation of writing talent, Thousand Films has particular expertise in finding writers from under-represented backgrounds, and since 2019 has run schemes for female writers and writers of Black, Asian and other racial and ethnic backgrounds with BBC Studios, Netflix, Sky and Sid Gentle Films.
Thousand Films’ reading process has been refined over many years to benchmark script quality, and identify writers that are ‘industry ready’. Its biggest success to date is finding the award-winning Disney+ comedy ‘Extraordinary’ by Emma Moran. Other ‘industry ready’ writers discovered by Thousand Films have seen almost 30 of their original projects taken into development with producers in the UK and beyond. A third of those projects have also been taken into funded development by major broadcasters and streamers.
